Comment on this change optional. The same card reader works fine with boradcom same guest installation when I use it in VMware player. My googling through the community indicates that others have had this problem and it has never been solved.

I have a feeling that since the service is set to run at start up, but the card is "inserted" in the guest after the VM has already started, the service fails due to the lack of appropriate hardware. This bug affects 3 people.
